Hi Everybody!
I hope you are enjoying the last bits of 2024 and have had a year to be grateful for and another year to look forward to. This installment of Unpopular Science is all about the attitude of gratitude and the science to prove how amazing it is for your health. But before I get into the research I have a little bit of gratitude I want to share first.
I would like to thank all of you for being a part of Enlighten Therapy's first 5 YEARS in business! I am so grateful to all of you; readers, patients, mentors, and other health/wellness providers, who have welcomed me and my "woowoo" style of physical therapy to the peninsula. I am grateful to be allowed to witness your health journeys and to create a community of wellness with you.
As we roll into 2025 I will be saying goodbye to my Port Townsend office (Glow) and transitioning to work only in Sequim. I want to give a special shout of gratitude to Connie (the owner at Glow) and all of the Glow Girls (Melodee, Alyssa, Analicia, Luna, and Alina) who I have worked with over the past 5 years. You have given me an office to call home and a sisterhood of boss babes that are truly supportive. I also want to say thank you to all of my Port Townsend patients, you have made my time at Glow truly memorable and I will miss each and every one of you who are transferring care to the other amazing body workers in town. And to those of you following me to Sequim, I can't express how much your confidence means to me. It makes me want to be the best therapist I can be.
But enough about that, let's move on to why you are reading this... the science. The article by Wang and Song (see link below) is a systematic review, which is a consensus of multiple research articles all bundled into one. They have done all the leg work, found the relevant research and wrapped it up in a nice little bow for us to read with leisure. And they looked at a lot of studies, 19 of them to be exact, with just under 3000 test participants, and found that being grateful can improve your health. Some of the most interesting findings related to increased gratitude were lower heart rate, decreased inflammatory markers, decreased stress, and improved sleep. How awesome is that!
So click on the link below and read the full article for all the ways research is showing how being more grateful can improve your life. Remember the attitude of gratitude this season, it may improve your life in more ways than you know. Looking forward to seeing all of you in 2025.
